The Singapore Art Museum featured the works of Boerhanoedin Affandi Koesoema in a joint partnership with Credit Suisse. Dubbed “a painter genius” by the Times Magazine, Affandi is known for using his hands instead of paintbrushes to manipulate oil paints directly on the canvas. He has a tendency to use strong colors such as green, red and yellow, which encapsulates the moods of the subjects in his painting.

SINGAPORE - What do Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam (JBJ), Sylvia Lim and Francis Seow have in common? A little known fact that most take for granted is that all three were formerly part of the establishment.

SINGAPORE – “The foreign diplomat’s nightmare begins with an increase in a nation’s defense spending” or so as the saying goes. Yet, there is some truth in that. Lewis Fry Richardson and Anatol Rapopot have mathematically demonstrated the implications of increased defense spending within a regional polity. SINGAPORE – I was on particularly good terms with a schooling kid by the name of Jeremy (surname with-held to protect identity) who lives within the vicinity of my neighbourhood. He was a sporty child, albeit with a rebellious streak. However, he didn’t show his rebellious nature when I interacted with him, I guess because a certain type of chemistry that cemented our friendship and amicable respect for each other was there.

SINGAPORE - Having been through our education system as a science student, I somehow developed a cynical view of the process that students go through. “Rote-learning”, “memorizing”, “regurgitation” and “being exam-smart” were all apt description of the way we were being educated.

SINGAPORE – Miss Stephanie Chok of The Online Citizen reported an incident in which a construction worker from China was issued a receipt containing obscenities when he purchased a top-up Singtel card from a shop. The top of the receipt screamed “F**k U”, and the bottom was signed off with a “F**k your mother” message”. Apparently, this is an instance of a hate message by the perpetrator.

The last few days, I had to don the green uniform to answer my reservist call-up. Expecting proceedings to be part of a formality, I didn’t expect to bring home a pleasant surprise through another fellow national serviceman whom I met along the way.
