Influencers are growing in popularity amongst the youth in society today. This phenomenon makes me wonder: Why? Why are influencers having so much “influence” amongst the youths today? What is it about them which makes them so popular and influential? I have taken it upon myself to follow (or stalk) the social media accounts of numerous top influencers for a couple of weeks in order to find out what makes and gives an influencer influence…
- Looks matter
Let’s face it, in any given time in human history, looks matter. They matter because they are essential in getting attention and awareness, both of which are required prior to creating or having any influence. And it is probably one of the quickest and easiest ways of attracting attention, especially if you are well-endowed with features that appeal to the masses.
People only want and expect the best, thus to get a huge following, you have to be generating quality content to keep your audience engaged and interested in your daily shenanigans. And it is no secret that the competition amongst influencers for more outreach and following is pretty intense. This is to the extent that a simple portrait photograph uploaded to showcase their Outfit of the Day, more commonly known as OOTD, can involve large investments spent on personal grooming and in engaging professional services to get the job done. People not only want to see quality from you, they want to see quality with you. Influencers who are partnered with the very best usually have a larger following, though still falling short of being called a celebrity.
In my opinion, this probably outweighs point 1 by quite a fair bit. Any person who is well liked or popular certainly must have a charismatic persona, and at that point looks probably do not matter as much. They are probably a bonus. Some are interesting, some are funny, and some are unorthodox. Some call it the X factor.
- Something close to home
This is probably what separates the influencer from the celebrity. Most influencers are roughly around the same age group or generation as their followers, and are hence able to reach out far more easily to their followers. And since being an influencer, unless a celebrity, is by no means a full-time job, influencers go through just about the same routine and lifestyle as everyone else, while celebrities do as their term suggests and merely ‘celebrate’ everyday. It just feels more organic. In summary, celebrities are a fantasy to most, while influencers are probably what you would describe as goals.
There are certainly more concrete factors that can explain the rise of the influencers, but from my experience I feel that these four attributes are essential in creating the perfect influencer. And for those who are attempting to create an online presence for yourself, you’re welcome.
