You, you who are reading this right now, I wonder, what do you do while travelling from place to place? On the bus, on the train. In the car, on the plane.
What do you do?
Do you squint away at a white rectangle, catching up on your latest drama episode with bated breath and focused eyes?
Do you read a book, or a kindle, or perhaps even fanfiction or the news, eyes perusing fingers caressing a page, a screen; a scroll, a flip?
Do you blast music from your iPod, your phone, ranging classical instrumentals to indie rock, dubstep or whatnot?
I kinda like to play a game with myself. You know, observe the people around me, see what they are doing, and create backstories for them.
Maybe they have 3 kids and live in Tanah Merah.
Maybe they are professional piano tuners, or the CEO of an SME.
What are they thinking about? Maybe they want to have chicken rice for dinner.
We are so used to engaging in our technological devices that we tend to forget that the place we are in can be and comprises of living breathing beings that make up a paracosm of the society we live in
The next time you find yourself bored while travelling, promise me that you’d disengage from technology for awhile, and take a look at your surroundings, and dream up a paracosm of what could be. Let your imagination run.
